Oil and gas industry needs a watchdog

Dear Editor,

My wife and I run a ranch six and one-half miles up Dry Hollow Road south of Silt. A few years ago you could step out the back of our house and see the stars setting over the Mamms and hear the elk talking a mile away.

Now there are fires on the horizon blotting out the night sky and a low roar that pervades the countryside like a train passing, but it never passes! Recently, Encana has been surveying drilling sites down our private road.

I don’t dispute their right to drill, but I see no one out there watching out for the protection of wildlife, domestic animals, children walking to the school bus on our two-mile private road to say nothing of the anticipated noise and dust.

I built a garage for farm equipment and automobiles a year ago and had two visits from building inspectors to make certain construction followed plans. Seems to me we should have the same oversight of these drilling platforms.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission is over the mountain in Denver and as best as I can tell, facilitates the growth of the industry. If they are the watchdog, it’s like the fox guarding the henhouse.

I would think on-site inspection of this major industry here in Garfield County is imperative before any more harm is done to the people, property and way of life on the ranches south of Silt. Lets get a full time local government designee on board!

Sincerely,

Raymond and Judy
