Once a road, always a road

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your opinion on the Westbank road issue. It is refreshing to know how many people have the courage and social conscience to stand up for justice in the face of greedy developers and their lawyers.

We have seen no restraint, no ethics, no conscience in the legal maneuverings of Marlin and the lawyers. We do not believe there is any type of settlement agreement that would serve Westbank. Once there is a road, there will always be a road, and no amount of restrictions will guarantee protection against future expansion.

We hope the commissioners show their concern for families with small children who live on that cul-de-sac, who have no backyard, whose play area is the cul-de-sac, and who were there long before Marlin. We hope they show concern for upholding the law and protecting the citizens of Garfield County by denying any type of road access whatsoever. They should not allow Marlin to hold the recently discovered 1902 deeded access like a gun to our heads until we cave in to their demands. That deeded access has been abandoned since the 1950s, and it is not in any way appropriate to let Westbank take the bullet because someone neglected to formally vacate it.

This is unscrupulous legal maneuvering and it must be stopped if the county is to maintain respect and protect its property owners from being exploited.
