One dead following two-vehicle crash on Highway 82 Saturday night

A 66-year-old Glenwood Springs man has been identified as the victim of a fatal two-vehicle crash on Colorado Highway 82 in Buffalo Valley on Saturday night, according to Colorado State Patrol.
The Garfield County Coroner’s Office identified Mark Johnson, a resident of Glenwood Springs, as the driver who lost his life in the crash. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
The crash happened at mile marker 3.5 on the eastbound side of the highway. CSP troopers responded at 8:36 p.m. after reports of a rollover blocking both lanes. The highway remained closed from 8:53 p.m. to 1:28 a.m., according to alerts from the Garfield County Emergency Notification System.
According to the CSP incident report, Johnson was driving a 2002 Toyota Camry westbound on Highway 82 when he lost control on a left-hand curve. His car rotated counterclockwise, crossed both westbound lanes and entered the eastbound lane, where a 2025 Toyota Camry struck the front passenger side.
The impact sent Johnson’s car off the eastbound shoulder and down an embankment. The other vehicle came to a stop in the eastbound lanes.
Three people in the 2025 Camry were taken to Valley View Hospital. Two suffered serious bodily injuries, while the third had minor injuries.
Snow and ice made for dangerous driving conditions throughout the weekend, though CSP did not confirm whether the weather played a significant role in the crash.
CSP Public Information Officer Sherri Mendez said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
