Open space definitions differ at RFR

Dear Editor,

On the issue of open space, the two sides at the open forum were using different definitions.

When the mayor addressed the issue, he was looking at it from a city point of view. From his standpoint, open space is something to be used. If it is in the city, it should contain a park, cemetery, or other useful public facility.

On the other hand, when the opponents to annexation of Red Feather Ridge talked about open space, they were referring to the natural, unspoiled look of the countryside.

The 57 homes in the county plan have building envelopes close to the road. Much of the land (46.6 percent), even though privately owned, is designated as open space that is prohibited from having any structures at all.

The hiking path and bike path already installed along the west side of the Red Feather Ridge property are part of the county plan. So instead of seeing the city plan’s cemetery along the west side of the property, you will see what you see now.

The real question is, do we want our rural areas to look like the city or do we want them to look like countryside? Four Mile Road may not be in the city, but it is still part of the Glenwood Springs community and contributes in its own way to the Glenwood Springs small-town character.

Vote “no” on Red Feather Ridge annexation.
