Ora Beatrice Sloss

Ora Beatrice Sloss, 96, of Glenwood Springs, passed away at her home Jan. 1, 2009.

Ora was born Sept. 15, 1912, in Glenwood Springs, to Charles and Margaret (Malaby) Howard. The Malaby family settled in the valley in 1879, and Ora was a lifelong resident of Glenwood Springs.

She married Ellis Sloss, and spent her life teaching.

She was a member of the Valley View Hospital Auxiliary, Frontier Historical Society (Pioneer member), and the Delta Kappa Gamma Teaching Society.

She had a passion for bridge from high school until she was 90 years old. She also had a passion for teaching, reading, and never being lonely with a book. Ora was a friend to everyone who was touched by her life.

Ora is preceded in death by her husband; and sister Stella Olsen.

She is survived by son Stanley Sloss of Washington, D.C.; daughter Cheryl Hanlon of Treasure Island, Fla.; and other surviving family members Robert Porath and his children Mariah and Thomas of Boulder; Rosalee Malaby; Fred Malaby; Sig Olsen; Waunita Sloss; Robbyn Wright; Jarrod (Tema) Wright; and Nevaeh Babb.

A celebration of her life will be held this spring.

The family suggests memorials be sent to The Glenwood Springs Public Library, Valley View Hospital, or the Historical Society.
