OT goal downs Demons

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado – Lily McSwain had a pair of goals to account for the scoring by the Glenwood Springs High School girls soccer team on Thursday. But, an overtime goal from Palisade lifted the Bulldogs to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over the Demons in the season opener for both teams.

McSwain took a crossing pass from Jackie Knott and punched it into the goal near the far post, sending the match into overtime tied, 2-2. But Palisade, playing Glenwood on the turf at Stoker Stadium, managed a breakaway goal in the second overtime to come away with the victory.

“Considering that we haven’t been out on a real field since we started practicing this season, I feel pretty good about this group,” Glenwood coach Steve White said.

White complimented the play of sophomore Hunter Harbottle, who normally plays defender and midfield but stepped in to play goalkeeper on Thursday. The Demons’ other two goalies had previous commitments which prevented them from playing in the season opener.

The Demons are off until next Thursday, when they continue Class 4A Western Slope League play at Delta.
