Oz of New Castle starts comedy series next weekend

The laughs will be fast and furious as Oz, the Artists’ Workshop in New Castle, launches what it hopes will be a series of comedy nights with a performance next weekend.

Stand-up comics Jimmy Abeyta and Ernie Reese will appear at 8 p.m. Friday, March 26, at the Artists’ Workshop, 331 W. Main St.; the show is $15.

Headliner Abeyta has appeared at Denver’s ComedyWorks and at comedy clubs from Anchorage to El Paso.

He’s shared stages with fellow comics including Paul Rodriguez, Richard Jeni and Carlos Menci and has opened for musical acts such as WAR, Deniece Williams, Montel Jordan, the Ohio Players and Sir-Mix-A-Lot.

Abeyta has also been busy with a series of USO tours to locales including Korea, Japan and the always comedy-friendly Greenland.

As the winner of the Northern Colorado Coors Light Comedy Championships and 103.5 the Fox’s Radio Comedy Search, Abeyta has been compared to a “a cross between Paul Rodriguez and Red Skelton.”
