GRAND JUNCTION ” A woman whose handgun turned up in a pre-boarding security check at Grand Junction Regional Airport, won’t face charges, police said Tuesday.

The woman, identified by authorities as a 54-year-old Mesa County resident, was pulled aside at a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday after workers found a loaded .22 caliber handgun in her purse.

Police spokeswoman Linda Bowman said although the woman had a valid conceal-carry permit for the gun, officers believe she never intended it to fly with her.

“This was an oversight on her part,” Bowman said. “She was completely amicable, no problems whatsoever.”

The woman was questioned by officers but never placed under arrest, she said. Grand Junction police were called to the airport around 7:30 a.m. Bowman said the FBI was notified per department policy.

TSA regional spokeswoman Carrie Harmon said federal regulations allow guns, gun parts or ammunition, to fly only in checked baggage and the items must be declared to the airline.

They have to be stored in a hard-sided container, she said. There are various exceptions for law enforcement.

“If you’re traveling with a firearm, we recommend contacting your airline prior to traveling,” she said.

Bowman said the woman asked officers to hold on to the weapon until she’s back. The gun was booked into the department’s property room.

“She’s free to come get it when she returns from her trip,” Bowman said.
