Parachute accident sends 5 to hospital

PARACHUTE ” A single vehicle rollover accident 3 miles west of Parachute on Interstate 70 sent five people to the hospital Sunday night.

The accident occurred shortly after 9 p.m.

The car, driven by 19-year-old Emily G. Hill of Collbran was westbound on I-70 when it started to drift off the left side of the road, according to a Colorado State Patrol press release.

Hill then overcorrected and the vehicle skidded out of control and rolled two-and-a-half times, the CSP report said.

Johann Feller, 19, of Collbran was ejected from the vehicle through the sunroof and was pinned beneath the vehicle. Several witnesses to the crash were able to roll the car off Feller. He was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction where he is listed in critical condition.

Hill and three other passengers, Gary Carter, 21, of Grand Junction, Shalane Roberts, 18, of Collbran and Kyle Tolman, 21 of Collbran were taken to Rifle’s Grand River Medical Center where they were treated and released.

Hill was issued a citation for careless driving causing bodily injury.

The CSP report said that its investigation revealed that none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
