A child who died after tripping and falling underneath a school bus in a Parachute neighborhood Thursday was identified publicly Friday by the Garfield County Coroner’s Office.

“The Coroner’s Office has identified the child as 11-year-old Annaliese Backner (who was often called ‘Anna’ by friends and family), a Parachute resident and sixth grader at Grand Valley Middle School in Parachute,” a Friday news release states.

Around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, the Garfield County Coroner’s Office was dispatched to a Parachute neighborhood just after the incident.

“Shortly after, first responders arrived to the scene and determined the child had died,” the release states.

Backner’s autopsy was scheduled for later Friday, the release stated. The investigated cause of death is blunt force injuries, and the investigated manner of death is accidental.

Final certification on cause and manner of death will not occur for several weeks and until the final autopsy report is published, the release stated.
