Parachute man dies in motorcycle wreck

Staff Report

Parachute resident Nicholas Opanasenko, 43, has been identified as the motorcyclist who died Wednesday in a crash in Battlement Mesa.

The death is being investigated as an accident, though high speeds and alcohol are also being examined as possible factors in the death, according to the county coroner’s report.

Opanasenko was seen traveling at high speeds on West Battlement Parkway shortly after noon Wednesday when he lost control, was thrown from the motorcycle, and landed about 15 to 20 feet away after striking a light post.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
