Pauline Myrtle Hayes

Pauline Myrtle Hayes, 93, passed away March 21, 2005, at Heritage Park Care Center in Carbondale.

Pauline was born March 26, 1911, in Palisade, to Wayne and Mary Lou (Park) Minium. Her family came from Missouri and settled in the Palisade area, where Pauline attended elementary school. In 1917, the family moved to Rulison, where she attended the academy.

On Feb. 7, 1930, Pauline married Ruben Gardner, and they farmed on Porcupine Creek. In 1945, they bought a ranch on Taughenbaugh Mesa, where they lived until they retired and moved to Rifle. Ruben passed away in 1974.



In December of 1975, she married Don Hayes. He passed away in 1985.

Pauline is preceded in death by her parents; her first and second husbands; one sister; two brothers; one stepson, Rex Hayes; and her best friend and dance partner, Mat Bowers.



Survivors include son Larry (Mary Lee) Gardner, of Rifle; stepdaughter-in-law Dorothy Hayes, of Leadville; brother Kenneth (Pat) Cope, of San Leandro, Calif., granddaughter Betsy Hurla; great-grandson Joe Hurla; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, at Rosehill Cemetery in Rifle. The Rev. Dene Johnson of the First Christian Church of Rifle will officiate. Pallbearers are Kraig Kuberry, Vernon Murray, Joe Erickson, Rocky Baysinger, Nicholas Baysinger and Cody Baysinger.
