Pave at night, if you please

Dear Editor,

Along with many of you, I was on Interstate 70 Monday afternoon, going nowhere, as the right lane was being chip-sealed. I had started my downvalley commute from the center of Glenwood Springs about 55 minutes earlier. It took me another 55 minutes to get to Rifle.

As I sat in traffic, I saw numerous motorists making U-turns, both on I-70 and over on the equally slowed Midland Avenue. This practice is not only illegal, it can be down right dangerous.

As I crept along with the other frustrated drivers, watching the air temperature gauge on my motorcycle creep over 100 degrees, I couldn’t help but reflect on a scene I saw on my way home from Denver Sunday night.

At the Chief Hosa area on westbound I-70, at 9:30 p.m., CDOT was re-paving the left lane. This was not a simple chip-seal project, but a complete re-paving with all of the asphalt, oil and supply trucks such a job requires, as well as a large paving machine.

I have written letters to the CDOT Maintenance facility in Glenwood Springs, (202 Centennial, Glenwood Springs), and to CDOT Regional Director Owen Leonard, (222 S. 6th St., suite 317, Grand Junction, CO 81501), suggesting that future work on I-70 in our area be done at night.

Maybe if enough of us do the same, CDOT will change its procedures and we can avoid this problem in the future.
