Pedestrian hit on I-70 near Rulison

A Parachute woman was struck by a vehicle Wednesday on the westbound lane of Interstate 70 near the Rulison exit.Helana J. Williams, 75, was attempting to cross the westbound lanes to recover some personal belongings of a friend who had been in an accident at the location when the Nissan Altima driven by Bryan Gilmour, 22, of Crested Butte, hit Williams. The accident occurred shortly after noon.She was struck in the left-hand lane and was then thrown 18 feet onto the edge of the roadway, according to a Colorado State Patrol news release. The speed of the vehicle was estimated at 45 mph as Gilmour had slowed and moved into the left lane in an attempt to avoid Williams. Alcohol was not suspected and no charges will be filed in the crash.Williams was transported via Flight for Life to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. As of Wednesday afternoon, Williams was listed in stable condition, suffering a broken leg and some cuts and bruises.The westbound left lane of I-70 was closed for approximately three hours, but the right lane remained open.The Colorado State Patrol investigated the crash and was assisted by the Colorado Department of Transportation, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office and Grand Valley Fire Protection District.
