New babies

A baby boy, Logan Hunter Meek, was born to Steve and Amy Meek of Glenwood Springs, on May 17, 2002, at 5:06 a.m, at Valley View Hospital. Logan was 8 pounds, 3 ounces and 20 1/2 inches at birth. His grandparents are Ray and Barbara Hunter of Clearwater, Fla.; Carol and Jack Jorgensen of Paonia, Colo.; and Rodger and Linda Meek of Greeley, Colo.

Dean’s List



Kelly Raymond Winn, son of Richard and Eva Winn of Carbondale, was named to the dean’s list at the University of Colorado at Boulder’s College of Architecture and Planning. He is a Basalt High School graduate.

Janette K. Stanberry of Carbondale was named to the dean’s list at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.



Army Achievement

Army 1st Lt. Andrew R. Atkins has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal. He is the son of Jim V. Atkins of Carmel, Calif., and Liz R. Atkins of Basalt. The first lieutenant is a 2000 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

New grads

Sarah J. Williams, the daughter of Dennis and Anna Mae Williams of Glenwood Springs, graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins during the May 10 graduation exercises with a bachelor’s degree in human development and a minor in Spanish.

Laurie K. Sasser of Glenwood Springs received a bachelor of arts degree during May commencement ceremonies at the University of Vermont. Sasser graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences with a major in political science.

Jennifer Ashley Johnson of New Castle graduated magna cum laude with an art degree from Oklahoma Baptist University during commencement ceremonies in Shawnee on May 18.

Angela Lyons and Michelle Lyons of Rifle were named to the Dean’s List at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., for the spring 2002 semester.

Navy achievement

Navy Seaman Apprentice Orion Castellon, son of Jodi Castellon of Carbondale recently graduated from Operations Specialist School.

Navy Ensign Adam J. Diaz, son of Jane L. Johnson Aurora, Colo., and David R. Diaz of Silt, Colo., recently began the Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training Exercise in Brunei while assigned to the guided USS Vincennes, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. Diaz is a 1995 graduate of Rifle High School.

Collegiate honors

Alissa Lewis, daughter of Gary and Janet Lewis of Marble, accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and earned a spot on the Dean’s List. She will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at Montana State University – Bozeman. She is a 2001 graduate of Colorado Rocky Mountain School in Carbondale.

Student presentations

Angela Nichols, daughter of Mrs. Janet Nichols of El Jebel, gave a presentation entitled “The Cutting Edge: A Module Program to Eradicate Female Genital Mutilation in Senegal” during the second annual David Nelson Duke Undergraduate Colloquium held April 18 at William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo. Nichols is a senior with a public communications major.

John Inglehart of Glenwood Springs prepared a bilingual presentation, “An Investigation into the Nature of the Maquiladora Factories” at McPherson College, McPherson, Kan. Inglehart is a Spanish and international business major.

Roadeo Champ

George Byers, of Rifle, was a top place finisher in the Mid-Range (Single Axle) Truck category during the Colorado Department of Transportation equipment roadeo competition in Steamboat Springs on May 22.

Lottery winner
