PI box falls on small child

Greg MassPost Independent Staff

A 4-year-old girl suffered unknown injuries Thursday when a Post Independent newspaper box fell onto her in front of the Dairy Kreme restaurant. According to witnesses inside the restaurant – most of whom were either helping to pass out free Thanksgiving dinners to homeless people or sitting down and eating the dinners – the girl was playing around on the green newspaper box about 1:05 p.m. when it fell over onto her. “She opened the door to the Post Independent box and crawled up on top of the door and the machine fell over on her,” Dairy Kreme owner Tom Engel said. Neither the girl’s hometown nor her medical condition were available on Thursday. “The ambulance was right here like that,” said Sue Walgren, a Carbondale resident helping to distribute food. The girl was transported to Valley View Hospital to be treated for her injuries.
