Plans for fishing contest melt

The annual Rifle Gap Ice Fishing Contest scheduled for this weekend has been canceled.Recent warm temperatures have left the reservoir a little on the soft side, with watery edges. The contest was last canceled in 2000. “There’s a problem with access at the boat ramp,” said Pete Firmin, senior ranger for Rifle Gap State Park. “People trying to access at the boat ramp would be getting wet probably getting on the ice but definitely getting off.”Firman also said the ATVs typically used on the ice would probably be a safety concern. Those who registered for the contest can either roll their entry fee into 20 raffle tickets or get a full refund, said Rifle Area Chamber director Patty Lambert. The grand prize in the raffle, conducted by Colorado Sportsmen’s Wildlife Fund, is an Eskimo Quick Flip III Ice Shelter worth $380. There are several other prizes valued at about $100 each. The drawing will take place at 17712 Edlum Road in Grand Junction on at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5. Entrants do not have to be present to win. Profits from the raffle will benefit both the Rifle Area Chamber and the Colorado Sportsmen’s Wildlife Fund. For more information, call the Rifle Area Chamber at 625-2085, ext. 2.
