Play uses wit to battle sex assault, date rape among teens

A teen-friendly theatrical performance designed to educate and empower young people and help prevent sexual assault and date rape will appear this week in the Glenwood area.

“Until Someone Wakes Up” will appear at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 16 at the New Space Theater in CMC’s Spring Valley campus.

The free show is organized by the Advocate Safehouse of Glenwood Springs, the Stepstone Center of Carbondale, the Sexual Assault Victim Advocate Center of Fort Collins and the Larimer County Center for Mental Health.

The performance, featuring a group of young volunteer actors from the Fort Collins area, was first created in 1992 by theater teacher Carolyn Levy and her students at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

Composed of a series of skits, the play approaches some very serious subject matter with wit, humor and intensity ” since its debut, it has impacted thousands of people.

The show is appropriate to those 13 and over and will be followed by an interactive discussion with the performers.

The group was last in the Roaring Fork Valley in 2001 and their performances received very high praise from students, teachers and parents, said Scott Chaplin, director of the Stepstone Center in Carbondale.

In addition to the CMC public performance, the troupe will also perform for students at Basalt High School and Colorado West Regional Mental Health Center.

Parents of those students are especially encouraged to attend the Tuesday night performance.
