Please don’t attack Iraq

Dear Editor,

It is excruciating to read of our government’s thinking about invading Iraq.

1. Can we have so quickly forgotten the anguish of Vietnam where we fought with no clear notion of the end result?

2. After many months in Afghanistan – in a campaign with widespread support here and abroad – we have secured order in only a small area and have had little success in helping the people outside Kabul.

3. Even a nation as powerful as the United States should not be rash enough to invade a far off land with little to no support from the rest of the world.

4. Although there is widespread agreement that Saddam Hussein is an evil despot, there is no agreement on how his removal can bring about a stable, democratic regime.

Please pay attention to the likes of Colin Powell, a wise patriot who knows what war means. And ponder the following words from an earlier military hero: “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.” – Dwight Eisenhower.

Please do not go forward with a unilateral, unprovoked attack.
