Point of clarification on school admissions

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your interest in the issue of whether to incorporate sibling preference in the admission process for Carbondale Community School.

I would like to clarify a point, please, regarding the approximately 60 or 70 children who apply for spots at CCS annually. Those are not the number on “the waiting list” but the total applicant pool each spring.

Approximately half of those applicants will get into the school outright (12 students in kindergarten and usually two or three in each of grades 1 through 8) in the lottery. Some of these acceptees will choose not to attend, at which point the school moves to use of a waiting list.

Thank you again for your attention to our school.

Alison Osius, CCS parent
