Police fund-raiser promises to be magical night

The wave of a magic wand will support crime prevention in Glenwood Springs this September.

Children and adults can enjoy the 13th annual Magic! Magic! Magic! Show at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Glenwood Springs High School auditorium. The event, a fund-raiser for the Glenwood Springs Police Department’s nonprofit group Crime Prevention and Youth Activities Programs, has drawn about 150 people in past years.

An illusionist will perform magic tricks based on audience participation, in addition to a bluegrass fiddle performance, singing, dancing and comedy skits.

“From adults through small children, we try to do something for every age group,” said Margaret Wierenga, community service specialist for the Glenwood Springs Police Department.

Funds raised from the program will go toward other Youth Activities Programs events, such as a bicycle rodeo and a winter skate party. Other initiatives of the organization, including National Night Out in early August and neighborhood watch programs, will also benefit from funds raised during the event.

Starting Thursday, local businesses and residents will receive phone calls to purchase tickets for children or senior citizens, which can be given out before the event or at the door. Adult tickets are only sold the day of the show for $9.

“It’s very entertaining,” said Sgt. Levy Burris, crime prevention coordinator for the police department. “Everybody always likes the sleight of hand in magic.”
