Police investigate collision that injured cyclist

Staff Report

A bicyclist suffered serious injuries this past weekend when a van hit her as she rode along the south Highway 82 frontage road, commonly called Old Highway 82, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Sharon Johnson, 48, of the Basalt area, was riding westbound about 5:30 p.m. in the westbound lane of the frontage road a half-mile east of Garfield County road 100. Johnson was ahead of a Dodge Caravan driven by Pamela Maine, of the El Jebel area, that struck Johnson’s bicycle from behind.

The collision threw Johnson from her bicycle to the ditch between the frontage road and Highway 82. Johnson sustained serious injuries and was transported to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, then to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction where she was in serious condition Monday.

The crash is still under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol, and charges are pending. Alcohol is not suspected.
