One dead in I-70 rollover crash near New Castle Tuesday
One person was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash on westbound Interstate 70 near New Castle Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Garfield County Coroner’s Office and reports from the Colorado State Patrol, driver Rebecca McReynolds, 60, a resident of New Castle, was ejected during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The wreck happened at 12:39 p.m. Tuesday at mile marker 106, just east of New Castle, said CSP Trooper and public information officer Josh Lewis.
According to State Patrol reports, it appeared McReynolds lost control of her 2000 Chevrolet SUV and ultimately drove off the right side of the westbound lanes, rolled and struck an interstate sign.
There were no passengers, and no other vehicles involved, Lewis said.
Garfield County Coroner Robert Glassmire said in a press release late Tuesday that a contract forensic pathologist will help in determining the cause of death. “The manner of death is being investigated as an accident,” Glassmire said.
The right lane of westbound I-70 was closed for much of the afternoon Tuesday while the crash was being investigated and the scene was cleared.
