Police: Still no suspects in murder

Nearly a month has passed since Glenwood Springs artist Tom Lubchenco was shot to death while working at Wal-Mart, but police still have no suspects.

Glenwood Springs police have received some tips, but none have yet panned out. A $20,000 reward was offered July 2 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a killer.

Meanwhile, the department still has four investigators dedicated to the case, Glenwood Springs Police Lt. Lou Vallario said.

“We’re still writing reports and sorting through evidence,” he said. “At first when we arrived, everything was considered evidence, like pieces of broken glass.”

So the department is continuing the arduous task of eliminating possible suspects and evidence, Vallario said.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation hasn’t yet finished testing on items found at the crime scene. Vallario said even though the evidence was “rushed” at CBI, it still can take a month or more to get forensic test results back.

Lubchenco was shot to death around 11:30 p.m. June 16 inside Wal-Mart, while he was working there on the night stocking crew.

Police are basing their investigation on descriptions they received from witnesses of a 5-foot, 10-inch white male with a thin build who was wearing a black baseball cap and a black jacket at the time of the shooting.

He also might be in possession of a two-tone, black-colored backpack with two zippers that come together at the top.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Glenwood Springs Police Department at 945-8566.
