Pool push stagnates

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – The fund-raising drive for a swimming pool at the Glenwood Springs Community Center has gone “kind of flat,” drive spokeswoman Terri Miller said Wednesday.

So far, the “Let’s All Pledge” drive has collected 55 percent of the $3.2 million needed to build the pool, but time could be running out.

“We’re pushing forward and plodding on,” Miller said.

Last summer the LAP drive got a reprieve from its September 2002 deadline. But City Council told Miller that June 2003 will be the final deadline for the money to be raised.

At the time, city manager Mike Copp said the city’s $750,000 share must be used by June 30, 2003, because of bonding regulations. If it can’t be used by then for the pool, it must be spent on something else, he said.

The fund drive total is $1,755,000, Miller reported, $35,000 higher than in November. That includes the $750,000 pledged by the Glenwood Springs City Council.

Although the drive lost much of its steam, Miller said she’s encouraged that City Council named the pool as one of its goals for 2003.

The faltering economy, Miller figures, is at least partly to blame for the slowdown in pledges.

“We just need to urge everybody to move forward and get this thing done,” she said. “We’re still looking for that $1 million donor so we can name the pool after them.”
