Preliminary designs for improvements to Art Dague Pool have been drawn, and the city of Rifle and Parks and Recreation staff seeks public input. On Tuesday, Rifle residents and others interested are invited to join a presentation and discussion at the Ute Theatre at 7 p.m. for a presentation and discussion.

“In the 2016 strategic planning meeting we discussed the future of the swimming pool and through surveys it became clear that keeping the pool was a No.-1 priority for residents,” said Rifle Parks and Recreation Director Tom Whitmore. “We came up with general concepts based on surveys.”

The design will include several new features such as new buildings, an expanded deck surface area, a lazy river-bubble pit, a family whirlpool, tube and speeds slides and more.

While the preliminary budget estimate for the renovation is $5,700,000, Whitmore assures that no new tax funding will be sought for the project. Approval to finance the project will be put on the ballot at the Sept. 12 municipal election and if approved, the city would borrow funds to complete the project.

The loan would be repaid from revenue in the Parks and Recreation Fund, Whitmore said.

“This is a concept, it’s a hope, it’s not iron-clad, ” he explained. “We can’t do an indoor facility with current budget, but we can make a really good outdoor facility that will attract people.”

The charrette will be an open format presentation with question-and-answer opportunities throughout.
