Post Independent fund aims to make the holidays happy for local nonprofits
This holiday season the Glenwood Springs Post Independent and the Rifle Citizen Telegram are creating a new tradition of giving.According to Post Independent and Citizen Telegram Publisher Mike Bennett, the papers are creating a holiday fund that will go to support local nonprofit organizations through the holiday season.”To kick it off we’re donating $2,000,” Bennett said. “Our goal is to raise $10,000.”The papers will make weekly announcements of grant winners as soon as the applications start coming in, Bennett said. Grants will be made through the end of the year.Nonprofits are urged to apply either in writing to Mike Bennett, publisher, Glenwood Post Independent, 2014 Grand Ave., Glenwood Springs, CO 81601 or in an e-mail to email@example.com. Include the name of the group, the financial request and how the money will be used. The papers will use the Glenwood Springs-based Two Rivers Community Foundation to administer and distribute the funds. That will allow the donations to be tax deductible, since the foundation is a tax-exempt organization. When donations are received, the foundation will send donors letters of recognition that can be used as a tax receipt. In addition, for any ads in the Swap For Charity section of the Classified Ads in both papers, half the cost of the ad, $1.50, will go to the Holiday Fund. The fund, Bennett said, “is our way of giving back to the community. It’s an important role newspapers have.”Donation checks should be made out to the Two Rivers Community Foundation with the check memo indicating it’s for the Glenwood Springs Post Independent Holiday Fund. They can be delivered or sent to the Glenwood Springs Post Independent or the Citizen Telegram, 132 E.
