Post Independent seeks stories of cancer survivors

The Glenwood Springs Post Independent is inviting readers who are cancer survivors to share their story in a special glossy magazine that will honor people whose lives have been touched by cancer.

“Cherish Yesterday, Live Today, Hope for Tomorrow” will be included in the Post Independent and the Citizen Telegram on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Extra copies will also be distributed on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Rally the Valley, the first annual community cancer fundraising event sponsored by the Valley View Hospital Foundation.

“Almost everyone in our valley has been touched by cancer – through a family member, friend, acquaintance or their own experience,” said Post Independent publisher Stephanie Schafer.

“This section will share the stories of local cancer survivors, provide information on cancer awareness, highlight the services offered by health care and hospice providers in the region, and include an In Memoriam section to honor and remember those who lost their battle,” she said.

Readers who would like to share their story can fill out a simple questionnaire on the Post Independent’s website, and write a 200-word essay about their cancer journey. Those who share their story can also highlight up to three people on their cancer support team, and may send in a photo.

“It’s a good idea to write up your 200-word essay before you go online, so it says exactly what you want it to say,” Schafer advised. “We hope to hear inspiring stories from many readers.”

The online questionnaire is linked from the Post Independent’s home page, or can be reached directly by visiting

The deadline for submitting stories is Sunday, Sept. 16.
