Prep Soccer Roundup: Coal Ridge falls to St. Mary’s in Sweet 16

Going up against a powerhouse program in the form of St. Mary’s, Coal Ridge suffered a 5-1 loss in the second round of the 3A girls soccer state playoffs on Saturday.

The Titans’ lone goal in Colorado Springs came at the end of the first half on a corner kick sent in by Allie Ehlers and headed into the goal by Becca Mitchell.

“It was a pretty goal,” Coal Ridge coach Brian Blair said. “Getting that goal at the end of the half, I thought it might get us some momentum.”

But fourth-seeded St. Mary’s, owner of two of the last three 3A state titles, was able to hold the Titans off down the stretch.

Dawn Reachard finished with two goals for St. Mary’s. Sarah Egbert, Emily Loof and Erin Geiger added a goal apiece.

No. 13 Coal Ridge finished up its season with a 12-2-3 record.

“I’m excited for next year,” Blair said. “We have a young team, a lot of players coming back. We have the opportunity to see if we can improve and go farther in the playoffs.”

St. Mary’s (15-2) will face Manitou Springs in the round of eight.

Roaring Fork met a fate similar to Coal Ridge’s in Saturday’s Sweet 16 game at Faith Christian, losing by a 2-0 count.

“The girls played well,” Rams coach Heather Fox said. “They walked off the field with their heads held high. It was a good game.”

Roaring Fork, the 18th seed in the 32-team Class 3A bracket, finished up with a 12-5 record.

No. 2 Faith Christian (14-2-1) got goals from Caroline Jenkins and Arianna Brennon.
