Aspen’s boys basketball team remained perfect in 3A Western Slope League play with a 60-55 win over visiting Coal Ridge on Tuesday.
Daniel Amador drained a long 3-pointer with a defender in his face to put the Skiers up for good with a minute left in regulation.
A clutch basket and some free throws down the stretch helped Aspen (12-3 overall, 9-0 in the 3A Western Slope League) put the game away.
“I’m there for my teammates and when they need me to do something, they rely on me and I want to pull through,” Amador said.
The Titans (5-10, 4-5) appeared to take control of this back-and-forth tussle in the early stages of the fourth quarter; Robby Moore scored underneath and Darik Brown sank two free throws, giving Coal Ridge a 45-40 cushion with 5:45 to play.
Coal Ridge dropped a girls basketball heartbreaker at Aspen on Tuesday, losing by a 48-46 count.
Amanda Wenzel’s 14 points led the Titans, who dropped to 8-7 overall and 5-4 in league play. Britni Allen and Ciara Chacon finished with eight points apiece.
Rifle’s wrestling team had a rough go of it at Palisade in a Tuesday dual, losing to the Bulldogs, 62-7.
Picking up wins for the visiting Bears were 113-pounder Rogelio Navarro and 145-pounder Hugo Ruelas.
Navarro defeated Palisade’s Kyauna Martinez by decision, 2-0. Ruelas scored a win by major decision over Lonnie LaRue, 14-3.
