Prep Sports Roundup: Softball Bears bounced from state tourney by Holy Family

Rifle’s stay at the Class 3A state softball tournament was a brief one. The Bears, seeded 15 out of 16 teams at the Aurora Sports Park-hosted affair, lost to No. 2 Holy Family in the first round on Friday, 26-5.

Rifle, which was making its second straight appearance at the 3A state tourney, wrapped its season with an 11-10 overall record.

Holy Family, which improved to 18-4, advanced to the state quarterfinals against Berthoud later Friday afternoon.

The 3A Western Slope League’s other state qualifier, Gunnison, defeated Platte Valley in its Friday opener before losing to Rocky Ford in the quarterfinals.

The tournament finishes up today.

Two second-half goals lifted Hotchkiss to a 3-1 win over Colorado Rocky Mountain School’s boys soccer team on Thursday.

Miguel Ramirez, Josiah Fuller and Irvin Hernandez all scored goals for Hotchkiss.
