Prep Sports Roundup: Stagg third at Valley Invitational
GILCREST, Colorado – George Stagg managed a third-place finish at 145 pounds for the Grand Valley wrestling team, highlighting the Cardinals’ efforts at the 18-team Valley Invitational on Saturday.
Stagg defeated Platte Valley’s Cristain Wacker by coin flip in the third-place match at 145 pounds. The Cardinals finished in 13th place in the tournament with 56.5 points, behind University (59) and Middle Park (58). Valley took first with 221, with Longmont (187) and Platte Valley (142) following.
CARBONDALE, Colorado – Roaring Fork’s boys basketball team used a big third-quarter surge to run past Olathe 64-37 in the Class 3A Western Slope League game Saturday afternoon.
The Rams outscored the Pirates 24-7 in the third quarter after leading by only 23-22 at halftime. The victory kept Roaring Fork in first place in the league standings at 11-0 with a 12-2 overall record.
Olathe had a big second-half surge in the earlier game of the day, prevailing 52-46 over the Roaring Fork girls team. The Rams (7-7, 7-4 league) held a 23-16 halftime lead, but the Pirates (12-3, 10-2) Pulled within 31-30 at the end of the third quarter before winning it down the stretch.
