Preps roundup: Rifle volleyball clips Cardinals; Grand Valley football wins season opener

Rifle volleyball got off to a good start to the season, beating Grand Valley 3-0 at home Thursday.

Bears senior Brooke Allen was red hot on offense, collecting 11 kills. Senior teammate Kristyn Mentink chipped in nine aces on serves, along with 20 assists. 

Defensively, Rifle senior Madelyn Berglund picked up 20 digs. Senior teammate Crystal Santana picked up four blocks.



Grand Valley football also added its season and home opener to the win column, beating Ellicott 52-26 on Friday.

In other highlights, Rifle junior Anna Robinson took 8th place in the 162-pool female event at the Basalt Longhorn Cross Country Invitational 2023 on Saturday. She nabbed a time of 21:04.40.



Not far behind, Glenwood Springs junior Quinn Waaler took 13th in the same race with a time of 21:28.10. 

For the boys race, Coal Ridge senior Dallin Karren captured a respectable 12th-place finish with a time of 18:24.60. There were 165 competitors in the male event.

Finally, Rifle soccer remains undefeated. On Thursday, the Bears beat the Aspen Skiers away, 5-0.

• Rifle soccer (2-0) beats Aspen (0-1) away, 5-0

Friday

• Coal Ridge (0-2) loses 21-14 to Steamboat Springs (1-0) at home

• Glenwood Springs (2-0) wins 42-10 against Grand Junction (0-2) at home

• Grand Valley football (1-0) wins 52-26 against Ellicott at home

Saturday

• Coal Ridge soccer (1-1) loses 1-0 to Kent Denver
