Pricey pit stop

Dear Editor:

I was traveling down Highway 70 at 75 mph, which is way too fast for older drivers like me with slow reaction responses or younger drivers with little or no experience, and was repeatedly being passed by even faster drivers. I took the risk because I wanted to get to Michigan with a dog and cat in the car.

I needed to pull off the road for a pit stop. Try Rifle! Or, rather, don’t try Rifle’s rest stop. There is a distance of about two city blocks in which you are to slow down to 25 mph. There are no buildings or businesses in this short stretch of road, yet I was cited by the Rifle police for speeding at 40 mph.

Now after going 75, 40 seems slow and I was going even slower as I went around a curve to the front of the building. I had to stop soon, so I don’t know how the policeman had time to clock me. That ticket was for $80. So I guess I helped pay for Rifle’s new rest stop.

Travelers going east beware. Drivers going 80 or 90 on the freeway didn’t get stopped, just me, going 40. I’ll pay it, of course, but if that innocent moment of bladder discomfort causes my insurance to increase next year, I’ll really feel victimized.
