Primary election Tuesday

A statewide primary election will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 13.The only primary race in the area is between two Republican candidates running for Eagle County assessor. The winner will be the likely office-holder, since no Democrats have surfaced in the race.Incumbent Jody Caruthers, of Eagle, is facing a challenge from Joyce Mack, of Edwards.In Garfield County, Clerk Mildred Alsdorf has consolidated polling places since turnout is expected to be light.The polling place for New Castle was incorrectly listed in an article last week. New Castle area voters should report to the New Castle Community Center, 450 W. Main St.Polling places for the other communities are:-Carbondale Town Hall, 511 Meadowood, for precincts 1-4.-Garfield County Courthouse, Room 301, in Glenwood Springs, for precincts 5-12.-New Castle Community Center, 450 W. Main, for precincts 13-15.-Silt Town Hall, 231 N. Seventh, for precincts 16-18.-Rifle City Hall, 202 Railroad Ave., for precincts 19-23.-Parachute Town Hall, 222 Grand Valley Way, for precincts 24-27.Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.Absentee ballots must be returned by 5 p.m. on Tuesday to the clerk’s office in the Rifle Courthouse Annex, 144 E. Third St, or by 7 p.m. on Tuesday to the clerk’s office in the Garfield County Courthouse in Glenwood Springs.Voters registered as unaffiliated may declare and vote the party of their choice when the arrive at their polling place.Voters already registered with a party must vote that party’s ballot. It is too late to change party affiliation for the primary election.
