AVON, Colorado – An East Vail man is desperately looking for information that will lead him to his daughter’s 9-week-old puppy that was stolen out of their car Friday.

Cynthia Edgerton, 18, went into Walmart in Avon on Friday just before 5 p.m. and spent about 10 minutes in the store. She left two dogs in the bed of a Ford pick-up truck, an older dog and her 15-year-old sister Ellen’s 9-week-old blue heeler/border collie mix puppy, named Wilbur, while she shopped at the store.

When she came back out to the truck, only the older dog remained inside.

Avon Police responded and found a witness, Walmart employee Juan Carlos, who said he saw the dog-napping happen as he arrived for work for his 5 p.m. shift.

He described three teenagers, about 16 to 17 years old, who he saw take the puppy. A teenage girl was the driving and two teenage boys were passengers in what Carlos described as an orange crossover car, similar to a Nissan Murano, but he wasn’t sure if that was definitely the make and model of the car, said Avon Police officer Matthew Westenfelder.

One of the boys was in the back of the pickup truck with the dogs and Carlos saw him jump out and get into the orange car with the puppy. All three of the teenagers were described as white. The female also wore braces on her teeth, according to the description.

Westenfelder is working with a store manager at Walmart to access the surveillance video from the store parking lot. He said he planned on getting a look at the tapes by Saturday evening and hopefully that would produce some leads in the case.

Karl Edgerton, Cynthia and Ellen’s father, is offering a $500 reward for the return of the puppy. He said they bought the dog for $350 and wanted to offer a higher reward to deter those who stole it from selling the dog.

The puppy is male and weighs no more than 15 pounds. He has patches of blackish-blue colors and is mostly white, with brown spots above his eyes and around his face. Karl Edgerton described him as “very cute.”

The Edgertons have passed out and posted more than 100 flyers throughout the valley in an effort to get their puppy back.

Anyone with information should call Westenfelder at 970-977-1002 or Edgerton at 970-390-9664.
