Quilt show offers everything from traditional to original

More than 35 handmade quilts will be on display this weekend at the ninth annual Mother’s Day Quilt Show. The show is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 11, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at the Hotel Colorado.Sponsored by the Needle & I Quilters and Quilters of the Rockies, the show offers a variety of quilts, from the traditional double wedding ring and other patterns, to original designs. Quilts are both hand- and machine-stitched. There may also be some antique quilts on exhibit. This year’s featured quilter is Mary Williams of Glenwood Springs. Williams has had quilts featured in local shows for years, and her beautiful hand work has been displayed in the State Capitol.”This show is to promote quilting,” said Carole O’Brien, president of Quilters of the Rockies. Quilters come from Aspen and Eagle and everywhere between.The Advocate Safehouse Project will have a special display this year, as well as a display showing the stages involved in creating a quilt, and some quilted clothing. The Hotchkiss quilt guild, the S&B Quilters, will exhibit a special quilt that will be raffled off later in the year. Tickets will be available for $1 each.Visitors can vote for the popular choice award, which will award cash prizes for first-, second- and third-place quilts.
