Ralph Raymond Sample

Ralph Raymond Sample, lifelong resident of New Castle, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at his home on the Gray Eagle Ranch on East Elk Creek. He was 85.

Mr. Sample was born Sept. 19, 1917, in Glenwood Springs to Samuel John and Elsie (Harris) Sample. He graduated from New Castle High School and Mesa College.

He married Edna Coleman on July 26, 1942, at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Glenwood Springs. She survives.

Mr. Sample farmed and operated Sample’s Jersey Dairy. In later years, he raised cattle and sheep. With business partner Walt Thrall, Mr. Sample established the Glenwood Insurance Agency and Realty and Valley Realty. For many years he also sold Grange Insurance.

He was an active member of the Glenwood Springs Rotary Club, Glenwood Springs Masonic Lodge No. 65, York Rite and Scottish Rite, and Elk Creek Grange No. 415.

Mr. Sample enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing with family and friends. One of his greatest joys was saddling his horse and riding through pristine areas near his home.

In later years, Mr. and Mrs. Sample wintered in Arizona.

Mr. Sample is survived by his wife, Edna Sample of New Castle; by sons and daughters-in-law John and Pam Sample of Anchorage, Alaska, and Larry and Linda Sample of Lebanon, Ore.; by daughter and son-in-law Jeanette and Fred Davidson of New Castle; by grandchildren Angie Rowland of Portland, Ore., Wes and Amy Rowland of Junction City, Ore., Lonnie and Ann Davidson of Savannah, Ga., and Jennifer Davidson of Anchorage, Alaska; by great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Liam Davidson of Savannah, Ga., and Savanna Rowland of Junction City, Ore.; by a sister, Marge Chandler of New Castle; by a brother, Barton Sample of New Castle; by a brother-in-law, Albert Coleman of Loveland; and by many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1st and Main in New Castle. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery in New Castle.

Farnum Holt Funeral Home of Glenwood Springs is in charge of arrangements.
