Rams, Demons drop opening matches at state tennis tourney

Neither the Glenwood Springs High School No. 2 doubles team of Sadie Dickinson and Tessa Ebert nor Roaring Fork No. 3 doubles pair Shaeley Lough and Yaritza Zarate advanced past the first day of the 4A girls tennis state tournament.

Dickinson and Ebert suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Eaton’s Kayla Carroll and Shelby Edens at Pueblo City Park in Pueblo on Thursday.

“It wasn’t the best tennis I’ve seen them play,” Glenwood coach Phyllis Zilm said. “The girls they played had huge first serves. They could hammer the ball. It’s more power than they’ve seen, so it was a little intimidating.”

As for Lough and Zarate, they dropped a battle with Colorado Academy’s Sara Esfahanni and Caitlyn Barron, 6-1, 7-5.

“It was such a great time, a great experience for the girls,” Roaring Fork coach Eileen Waski said. “They learned a lot of new stuff to work on and they met some new friends. It was very enjoyable watching the rest of the other teams play and picking up some new strategies.”

State tournament play finishes up today. With nasty weather in the forecast for Saturday, Colorado High School Activities Association organizers opted to consolidate the three-day tourney into two days.
