Re-2 board to meet

Garfield Re-2 Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. today at the Learning Opportunity Center in Rifle. Board members are expected to make a decision regarding the proposed student activity fees, before- and after-school program fees, and the summer school fee structure. The student activity fees the district will consider include implementing a $50 charge per sport per student and $10 fee per student per activity for all nonathletic clubs. Re-2 is the only district in the area that does not charge an activity fee, district finance director Christine Hamrick said at the most recent board meeting. The proposal makes allowances for students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The district will provide scholarships for those students. The purpose of the fees is to offset the rising cost of supporting the programs. The district runs activity buses for students who participate in sports and clubs before and after school, and transports teams to events. Hamrick estimated the district would spend an extra $60,000 on fuel during the next school year. The fees are only expected to cover about a third of that increase.Board members will also hear presentations from Rifle Middle School staff tonight, as well as the school facilities and transportation departments.
