Re-2 remains below the state CSAP average

RIFLE – The 2006 Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) scores were released Wednesday, and although scores for the Garfield School District Re-2 were up in percentage points in three of the four required subjects, the district overall, is still below the state average in all areas. “We are pleased with the overall performance of the district,” said Theresa Hamilton, Re-2’s director of districtwide services. “The students and the faculty are working hard. We have areas that we need to improve on, obviously. But, we have improved over last year’s results and feel that we are making gains and growth in our students’ learning.” Improvements are in scores in reading (1 percent), math (1 percent), and science (3 percent). Writing was down 4 percent. “Districtwide, we see growth in seven out of nine grades in reading, and five out of nine in math,” Hamilton said. Significant positive gains in reading came from Highland Elementary’s third grade (up 16 percent); in writing, both Wamsley and Highland third-grade classes showed an 18 percent increase. Riverside Middle School fifth-graders showed an increase in writing by 12 percent, as well as an increase in math (up 13 percent) at the eighth-grade level. The biggest drop was 29 percent in reading from Roy Moore Elementary’s third-grade class. Roy Moore also showed decline in writing, down 15 percent for the fourth grade and down 17 percent in math for the fifth grade. The CSAP is just one way that the district assesses students’ progress in the schools. “The important thing to remember is that the tests are not to evaluate the teachers, but to evaluate the students’ learning,” said Larry Brady, director of curriculum and staff development for Re-2. “We need to continue to improve upon how we look at the data to drive the instruction of the teachers, so that students can become proficient at the state standard.” The school district also implements new ideas into the schools from CSAP data to help teachers understand and come up with better ways to help the students who are struggling. “We use multiple assessments to guide and shape the instruction for our students,” Hamilton said. Other assessment practices include the Measure of Academic Progress, or MAPS. These tests are administered at the beginning and the end of the year to track student progress. Because CSAP scores are not available right away for analysis, the MAPS tests can help staff know quickly how the individual student is doing compared to the rest of the class. The Dynamic Indicators of Early Basic Literacy Skills, or DIBLES, is a new implementation that will take effect this year in the Re-2 school district at an elementary level – as early as kindergarten – to asses the early-learning habits of children.
