Re-2 teacher dies in horse-riding accident

RIFLE, Colo. Staff, co-workers, students and friends from Highland Elementary School in Rifle are mourning the death of Lacey Oldland, a kindergarten teacher at the school for the past two years, who was killed in a horseback riding accident on Monday, July 9.The accident occurred at the Oldland family Piceance Creek Ranch, in the Piceance Creek area near Meeker, according to a press release from the Garfield School District Re-2.A lot of the staff is out of town during the summer break, but news of the teacher’s untimely death spread quickly and hit close to home.”The staff at Highland is absolutely reeling over this news,” said Highland Elementary principal Peg Connealy. “Lacey was an excellent teacher and was beloved by her staff members.”Oldland, 26, was hired by the school district in August of 2005 as a part-time kindergarten teacher at Highland due to an unexpected increase in enrolled students. Prior to that she did her student teaching in Meeker.”She loved the area, working with her horses and she loved working with the kids,” Connealy said. “She is going to be greatly missed.”Connealy said that the school is planning some type of memorial in the fall in remembrance of Oldland but nothing has been determined.Contact John Gardner: 384-9114jgardner@postindependent.comPost Independent, Glenwood Springs, Colorado CO
