On February 5, 31 Spanish-speaking Basalt High School students, 22 boys and 9 girls, participated in an all-day preventative health program hosted by the Roaring Fork Family Resource Centers. What made this day unique was the fact it was all in Spanish. The students are part of the English Language Learner (ELL) program with teacher Jackie Vosler, and will not have access to school’s health curriculum because they are still learning English. We provide this day of practical information so they get the information in their first language. We would like to thank the health care providers who volunteered their time, sharing their knowledge with the students. Jenny Lang, from Mountain Family Health clinic in Glenwood Springs, taught the students about the reproductive systems of the male and female bodies, as well as the risks posed by sexually transmitted diseases. Planned Parenthood’s Glenwood Clinic sent Gaby Bello to educate the teens about the risks and benefits of different birth control options. Four student mothers from the Yampah Teen Parent Program, Norma Cigarroa, Alely Arana, Paloma Ceballos, and Anjelica Salcido along with teacher April Paine shared their hard-earned wisdom about making choices. Karen Iverson from the Advocate Safehouse project, along with Yuri Ortega, Ana Villagomez and Cynthia Garcia from Coal Ridge High provided insight about healthy relationships and how they differ from abusive relationships. Pathways provided information its outpatient programs. Missy Ivy brought materials on quitting smoking, and Kathy Johnson provided some hands on nutrition information. We also extend our thanks to the Eagle County Community Center for providing the space free of charge. And thanks to all the Basalt High School students who attended, listened and asked meaningful questions. The Roaring Fork Family Resource Centers are a nonprofit entity of the Roaring Fork School District connecting families, schools and communities to improve student health, well-being, and academic achievement.
