On Dec. 10, I started out to feed my cows and as I was going past the pond, I saw a cow in the middle of it. She had broken through the ice. I hurriedly shut off my tractor and grabbed my axe and shovel. Then I carefully went out on the ice and started chopping a channel toward the shore. I chopped and chopped until I was winded. After I caught my breath I continued chopping. Soon I realized that I would need some help. So I dropped everything and went to the house to call 911.

After giving my address and other information, I went back down to the pond and started chopping ice again. I was still chopping ice when the rescue people came. I was sure glad, because, I was about all in by this time. It took us quite a while to finish getting her out of the pond. Using a chain saw and a lot of hard work we finally got her to the bank.

She was cold and weak so she laid down in the snow and rested. I then went and fed the rest of my cows. After a while the cow came up to the feed ground and started eating.

The cow was up and feeding this morning about daylight. I believe she will be all right. I checked again about 10 a.m., and she was well. Thanks to the Burning Mountain Fire and Rescue.
