The Roaring Fork Rotary/Club Rotario thanks the donors, participants, sponsors, vendors and volunteers who gave energy, resources and time Sunday, Aug. 28, to the ninth annual Festival of the Americas in Carbondale’s Sopris Park.
We raised more than $10,000 toward CMC scholarships for low-income, promising local graduates from the class of 2012 and for Rotary International’s campaign to eradicate the global scourge of polio.
Live music rocked the stage all day, with Ballet Folklorico Raices de Grand Junction, Flama Show, Los Jefes, and Los Angeles’ renowned Sonora Dinamita, interspersed with free Zumba lessons by Paula Valenti and free salsa lessons by Tere and Ricardo Hernandez. Thanks to El Malibu for booking Sonora Dinamita, our volunteer emcee Axel Contreras, and our great sound team Patrick and Wayne at Full Circle Productions.
Among others who graciously helped: Veronica Whitney (El Montanes) and Gabe Chenoweth (KMTS) donated free publicity, Anibal Guevara managed our electrical needs, David and Alyssa Reindel of Evergreen Events provided recycling services, A-1 Traffic Control helped us with permit compliance, Orrison Distributing and Waste Management assisted with our beer garden, several acts performed free for charity, and contributors for the free drawing and in-kind donors were too numerous to mention.
Generous sponsors included: Alpine Bank, Aspen Real Estate Co., Colorado Mountain College, KSNO, KUUR, and Channel 19 TV Aspen (Platinum); Wells Fargo Bank and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage (Gold); The Law Office of Donald J. Kaufman and The Law Office of Jennifer M. Smith, P.C. (Silver); and Bethel Party Rentals, Copy Copy, One World Translation, the Town of Carbondale and U.S. Bank (Bronze).
Club Rotario announced the 2011 Jackie Morales Distinguished Awards for Community Service: Sonya Hemmen (educator), Karen Trejo (professional), Alex Alvarado (student) and The UVAP Committee: Morgan Jacober, Liz Raymond, Liz Penzel, Sonya Turner and Sarah Smith (volunteer). Kudos also to Luis Polar for producing these awards and to 2011 Rotarian of the Year Julian Hardaker. These leaders have worked tirelessly to bring bicultural harmony and integration to our valley, and we salute them.

The fourth annual Community Yard Sale held on Sept. 17 at Community Banks of Colorado was another success in spite of the rain.
All proceeds from the sale benefited the United Way of Garfield County.
Special thanks to all those community members who graciously donated gently used items to sell and recycle. We could not have done it without you.
