Red Cross assistance much appreciated

Janet Rickert

Dear Editor,

I would just like to thank the American Red Cross for their assistance to the evacuees of the Coal Seam Fire. I was at work at the Hot Springs Pool on Saturday night when the fire was threatening town, and I was unable to get to my home in West Glenwood. I got a hotel room at the Hot Springs Lodge for that evening, but was then evacuated at 1:30 a.m. With nowhere to go, I headed to CMC and the Red Cross shelter. I was petrified and shaking when I arrived there, because I had no idea where my family was. The very first volunteer I met set the tone for what was to be a two-day stay at the shelter. She was kind and smiling and offered to help in any way possible. With the outpouring of community donations, the evacuees were provided with plentiful food and drink, clothing, toiletries, medication, books, games, diapers and kid’s games. Prior to this experience, I had no idea to what extent the Red Cross provides relief to those faced with disaster. Thank you for being there for us in our time of need!

Sincerely,

Janet Rickert

West Glenwood
