Referendum A channels water to Front Range

Joe Mollica

Dear Editor,

The following are my thoughts on Referendum A, a statewide initiative to be voted on this fall.

1) Referendum A is not specific enough. It calls for the bonding of up to $2 billion to build water storage projects, but does not outline the details of any of these projects. This is basically taxation without representation.

2) Referendum A could take away water from Western Slope river basins where it is needed to provide for our future growth, recreation and wildlife. The Colorado River Water Conservation District already does a great job in managing the transfer of water to the Front Range from dams and diversions currently in place.

3) Referendum A may end up costing residents for water storage projects exclusively for the Front Range. The Front Range has its own water districts with bonding ability.

4) Referendum A may negate the current gains we have made in conservation and wise use of our water resources. Many residents of Colorado have done a great job in conserving water. We can become even more efficient in the wise use of this precious resource. One of these methods is to use free market incentives, in which residents are monetarily rewarded for using less water available for use by farmers, recreation, and wildlife.

In conclusion, I am afraid that if more diversions are constructed, conservation efforts will be abandoned and more water will simply be pumped to the Front Range at the expense of the Western Slope.
