The Colorado Department of Transportation said Tuesday that the popular Glenwood Canyon bike path is closed until further notice between Hanging Lake and Shoshone rest areas.

The Colorado River water level rose overnight, leading to the closure, said CDOT spokeswoman Tracy Trulove.

Streamflow on Tuesday morning on the Colorado at Dotsero was 9,080 cubic feet per second, above the average for the date of 6,640 cfs, but well below last year’s heavy runoff, which peaked at 17,100 cfs at Dotsero.

The eastern stretch of the trail was closed much of last summer after high water caused significant damage. The state made what it hopes are lasting repairs in the fall.
