The Post Independent retracts a “My Side” column written by Linda Siever. In the column, which was published on page 10 Thursday, Siever claims to have been a substitute teacher for Roaring Fork School District Re-1. However, Re-1 officials said they have no record of a Linda Siever ever working as a substitute teacher for the district.Furthermore, repeated attempts to reach Siever after her column was printed have led the Post Independent to question whether her identity even exists. “The process we use to verify guest columns broke down,” managing editor Thomas Martinez said. “I take full responsibility for the mistake.”The breakdown occurred when the paper relied on e-mail verification, which is not its policy, instead of verifying the column with a phone call.”We take this very seriously,” Martinez said. The paper is considering options, one of which might be legal action.Due to the sensitivity of the column’s issue, which is election-related, the paper’s management decided to issue a front-page retraction. The Post Independent regrets this retraction and the resulting breach in trust with its readers. The Post Independent regrets this retraction and the resulting breach in trust with its readers.
