RFHS senior wins national merit scholarship

CARBONDALE, Colo. Roaring Fork High School is proud to honor graduating senior Masha Williams, named as a National Merit Scholar in the 2007 competition. Williams is one of only 8,200 scholars and anticipated scholarship winners selected this year through the National Merit Scholarship program. The merit program, established in 1955, begins each year after more than 3 million students take the PSAT test as high school juniors, and 1.4 million of those students from more than 21,000 high schools enter into the scholarship contest. Eventually 16,000 students qualify as merit semifinalists by demonstrating a high potential for future academic accomplishment through distinguished performance.Williams, a senior who graduated from RFHS on May 26, plans to attend New York University to study political science. She originally came to the valley from the Ukraine when she was 5 years old, speaking only Russian. She attended public schools in the Roaring Fork School District from first through 12th grades.By the end of the National Merit competition this year, some 8,200 academic champions will win Merit Scholarship awards worth $34 million.Suzie Romig is the public information officer for Roaring Fork School District Re-1.Post Independent, Glenwood Springs Colorado CO
